Masculinity, jealousy and change
The role of jealousy is a significant one in understanding love and intimacy in film. Yates (2007) examines the relationship between jealousy and masculinity, and explores a psychosocial perspective on jealousy. Both Mullen (1991 a) and Stearns (1989) explore the history of jealousy in Western society and explore changing social and cultural attitudes to understanding jealousy. Stearns argues that whereas jealousy was once an accepted public emotion, it was also linked to gender norms and relations of possession. Male jealousy was linked to a sense of male entitlement and of protecting what they saw as their property. This changed in the twentieth century when feminists challenged the sexual double standard and gained more social, economic and legal rights. Male jealousy is more widely linked to domestic violence and stalking in contemporary relationships (see Mullen, 2010a).
Psychosocial and sociological perspectives have examined the relationship between emotions and social change. Elias (2000) shows that public displays of anger such as jealousy were perceived as being antisocial, as he developed in his thesis of The Civilising Process (see Brooks, 2014 a; Lemmings and Brooks, 2014). Stearns (1989) draws on Elias in his discussion of the changing âemotionalityâ of jealousy, and discusses the ways in which jealousy, which is linked to attachment and the need for another person, is often considered in a society underpinned by individualism and the values of a free market, whereas Yates (2016) notes âself-sufficiency, narcissism and self -promotion are the goalsâ.
